Angelina Tran An engineering student at the University of Washington was fatally stabbed more than 100 times while trying to protect his mother from his angry stepfather.Angelina Tran, 21, woke up early on August 7 after hearing the sounds of fighting at her parents’ home in Seattle’s Beacon Hill neighborhood.

His stepfather, Nghiep Kein Chau, 54, punched his mother in the kitchen at least 12 times, according to the allegation documents.Prosecutors said that Tran decided to intervene immediately, at which point Chau began attacking both women.His mother eventually managed to escape, and Tran tried desperately to stop Chau from following her as she ran off to call 911. Allegedly, the two struggled and fell to the ground when Chau grabbed a knife and fatally stabbed Tran. 107 times in total.

According to the indictment documents, the attacker stopped the stabbing spree several times during the attack; once to change his clothes, once to grab a different knife.Home security footage also shows Chau calling Tran’s mother after calling the police, the Seattle Times reported.Officers finally arrived shortly before 5 am and found the unidentified woman covered in blood from her face wounds.They also found Chau still holding the bloody knife on his clothes, before allegedly confessing to “I killed someone”.

Chau was immediately detained and later told police that he had “argued” with his wife, to whom he had been married for 19 years.Allegedly, Chau told through a translator how he shot Tran’s mother because she thought she would divorce him and take her money.He also said that he got angry when Tran intervened,

and claimed that if he had found his wife before the cops arrived, he would have killed her, according to the charge sheet. Kings County police arrived at the scene at Tran’s Beacon Hill home shortly before 5 am.
KIRO 7 Officers later issued a search warrant and confiscated evidence from the home, including home security footage, which prosecutors say shows the initial assault and most of the stabbing.

Chau is charged with first degree murder and attempted murder in the first degree. He is being held at King County Penitentiary on $5 million bail after prosecutors claim he risks escape and poses a danger to society.The hearing, scheduled for Wednesday, has been postponed to August 31. Meanwhile, Tran’s friends and family held a fundraiser for the National Asia Pacific Center on Aging in memory of the engineering department.
