The cause of death of runaway aristocrat Constance Marten’s baby girl remains a mystery, the child’s inquest has heard.

Marten, 35, and her ella’s boyfriend Mark Gordon, 48, were arrested after baby Victoria was found in a plastic bag in a shed under a heap of nappies on a Brighton allotment following a nation-wide search.

The couple are charged with the manslaughter of Victoria, concealing the birth of a child and perverting the course of justice. They have also now been charged with child cruelty and causing or allowing the death of a child between January 4 and February 27.

The baby girl’s inquest in West Sussex heard that a post-mortem examination performed on March 3 could not establish a cause of death. No date of birth had been given to Victoria, and the inquest was suspended as police continue to look into the causes of her death.

According to the Newspaper

According to the Times newspaper, West Sussex assistant coroner Joanne Andrews said: ‘The inquest will only summarize if there is sufficient reason to do so.’

Marten appeared at the Old Bailey on Monday via videolink from HMP Bronzefield in a white flowery blouse while her boyfriend appeared in a gray tracksuit from HMP Belmarsh.

Hundreds of officers from the Metropolitan Police and Sussex Police, as well as search and rescue volunteers, scoured 90 square miles of land.

The couple were caught on CCTV wearing heavy outdoor clothing and carrying bags down the street before they were arrested.

They were reported missing on January 5 after their car caught fire on the M61, near Bolton.

It is thought Marten had given birth just a few days before and had not been assessed by medical professionals.

Over the following days, there were sightings of them in a number of places, including Liverpool, Essex, south London and East Sussex. The couple had been sleeping rough in a blue tent and had avoided being traced by the police by only making payments in cash and booking hotels using false names.

Marten was born to a wealthy family and grew up at Dorset estate Crichel House and her grandmother de ella was a playmate of Princess Margaret. The promising drama student met Gordon in 2016 and they led a nomadic lifestyle after leaving their home in southeast London last September.

Marten’s estranged father Napier Marten is a former page to the late Queen and her mother de ella was the Queen Mother’s goddaughter.

Mr Marten and her mother Virginie de Selliers made public pleas for Constance’s whereabouts through the media while police offered a £10,000 reward for information leading to the couple being found.

They will next appear for a mention hearing to consider custody time limits on August 25 while their plea and trial preparation hearing has been set for August 18.
