DA Jason Williams New Orleans’ District Attorney and his elderly mother were carjacked by an armed suspect Monday night, according to a spokesperson for the top law enforcement official.
Keith Lampkin, a spokesman for the DA’s office said that Jason Williams and his mother, 78, were held at gunpoint as Williams was attempting to help his mother into a car.
‘DA Williams and his mother were unharmed and both thank the NOPD for their hard work tonight and every night responding to crime victims,’ he said.
Williams and his wife Elizabeth appeared unharmed as they discussed the evening’s events with New Orleans police officers outside of their home several hours after the incident.
When asked by reporters for additional details about the incident, Williams said: ‘It’s been a long night. I’ll get with you in the morning.’
As of Tuesday morning, police had not released further information about a suspect or possible suspects.
New Orleans has grappled with increased violent crime over the last several years. In September of 2022, it had the most homicides per capita among major US cities.
By the halfway mark of this year, the city had already logged more than 100 murders – nearly exceeding the total number of homicides that occurred in all of 2019.
Dr. Peter Scharf, a professor at LSU School of Medicine said, ‘We have too many damn guns. Too many crazy kids. Too few prevention resources. And law enforcement is not funded to the level it needs to be funded to.’
In 2022, New Orleans was the only non-Mexican city to rank among the 10 deadliest cities in the world, The southern city came in at number eight on the list with a rate of 70.6 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants.

Carjacked at gunpoint as city ranks
The city’s carjacking rate went up right along with its murder rate, climbing a whopping 165 percent between 2019 and 2022. According to the city’s crime dashboard, there were at least 273 carjacking incidents in New Orleans last year.
Part of Williams’ job in his capacity as DA is to determine how to charge carjackers and those wreaking havoc across the city.
He recently made headlines for opting to try a group of teenagers accused of killing a 73-year-old woman in a carjacking as adults.
Linda Frickey, the 73-year-old grandmother, was beaten and thrown from her car by John Honore, Lenyra Theophile, Mar’Qel Curtis and Briniyah Bakerback in March of 2022.
As the teens attempted to remove Frickey from her SUV, her arm got twisted in the door and she was dragged to her death, her arm severing in the incident. She died of blunt force injuries.
The trial for the teenagers was scheduled to begin on April 4, but was delayed by a judge until March of next year. The Louisiana Supreme Court then ruled that the trial must be held in 2023.
Carjackings have been on the rise across the country in the last several years, prompting police departments in multiple metro areas to put out tips about how to potentially avoid becoming a victim of such a crime.
Multiple departments, including Washington, DC’s Metro Police Department say that drivers should try to travel in the center lane, which makes it more difficult ‘for potential carjackers to approach the car.’
Departments have also urged drivers to travel with someone else in their cars and keep doors and windows closed and locked.
The Dallas PD added carjacking victims should cooperate with suspects and make note of any possible descriptions before calling 911 when it becomes safe to do so.
