Now with their loved one gone, Grayson’s family is wondering why she was alone with the man in the first place.
“They feel strongly that there likely were a lot of balls dropped, leading up to the death of their mother and wife,” the family’s attorney Kelly Reardon told NBC affiliate WVIT.
Reardon is representing the family in a wrongful death and personal injury lawsuit over the victim who “dedicated her life to caring for others,” the law firm said in a statement.
Grayson’s death has sparked a conversation on protections for visiting nurses who put their lives at risk for homebound patients.
“Every day you leave your home, you’re not sure if you’re going to go home, if you’re going to get attacked,” Grayson’s colleague Merlyn Dunbar told Fox affiliate WTIC.
“We take a risk every day when we go into someone’s home.”
State Senator Saud Anwar, who represents Connecticut’s 3rd District, described the killing as a “wakeup call” for the entire state to do better.
He is looking at solutions so nurses know living situations before they enter a home alone.
Reese was released from prison early after nearly stabbing someone to death and moved into a halfway house, the police said.
It’s unclear if Grayson understood the nature of the home when she entered.
Grayson dedicated her personal and professional live to the care of others, as she was a foster and adoptive parent for almost two decades, according to the state’s Department of Education.
She cared for 35 children from 2002 to 2021 and was the mother of six and a grandmother to four, according to an obituary.
“Joyce was a beautiful soul, who dedicated her life to caring for others,” the obit reads.
“She loved her job as a mental health nurse, and it was truly what she was put on this earth to do.
“She passed away doing what she she loved.”
Reese has been charged with probation violation, possession of drugs, and larceny.
