Megan Waterman, A suspect has been taken into custody on New York’s Long Island in connection with a long-unsolved string of killings, known as the Gilgo Beach murders, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Friday.

One of the suspect’s believed victims is Megan Waterman, a 22-year-old Scarborough whose body was found dumped along a remote beach parkway after her disappearance in 2010.

Megan Waterman died at the age of 22 years old.

Found Dead

Authorities found Waterman’s body during the search for Shannan Gilbert.

Police would later find nine other sets of human remains. In total, 11 sets of remains were found, including Gilbert, who was found in 2011, three miles east of where the other bodies were found.

Maine’s Total Coverage spoke with Waterman’s sister, Allie Pertel, last year when a newly released video showed Megan inside a hotel lobby. At the time, authorities hoped the video would spark a memory for someone and lead to evidence that would help police solve the case.

Pertel had said, “While we had closure in a sense that her body de ella has been found, this person is still out there. Who knows who they could still be victimizing?”

Police said while in New York, Waterman worked as an escort and advertised her services on Craigslist. Her sister Pertel said, “She was a victim of her lifestyle, truly of her lifestyle. Nobody wants to do what they’re doing in that role, but that’s where she found herself, unfortunately, and that should not dictate how long it’s taken or not taken to get answers.”

Suspect has Taken into Custody

The suspect was taken into custody in Massapequa late Thursday, and investigators were at a home connected to the case on Friday, the official said. The official was not authorized to publicly discuss details of the investigation and spoke to AP on the condition of anonymity.

The suspect’s name was not immediately released.

In talking about the bodies near Gilgo Beach, investigators have said several times over the years it is unlikely one person killed all the victims.

News of a suspect being taken into custody comes a day after state police responded to a report of skeletal remains found in a wooded area off the Southern State Parkway in Islip. Police planned a briefing near the site on Friday afternoon. It wasn’t immediately clear if those remains were linked to the Gilgo Beach case.
