Incident Detail

“You don’t want to start college that way and traumatically. You’re going to have memories of your friend. The whole experience is tainted by that,” Reynolds said.According to the Columbia Police Department, the shooting occurred just before 2 a.m. near Rosewood Drive at block 500 of South Holly Street. Police were initially called to the scene of possible home burglary, but the call turned into a report of shooting while on the road. Police said the victim, Donofrio, had already died of a gunshot wound to the upper part of his body on the front porch of a house when officers arrived.

Based on their preliminary investigation, police said Donofrio, who lived on South Holly Street, was probably trying to break into the wrong house when he was killed. Columbia Police is currently working with the Fifth Circuit Attorney’s Office to determine if there will be additional steps in the case.Neighbors said the street was filled with police cars and fire engines surrounding one of the houses. Reynolds said it was a tragedy that someone so young was taken away like this.

“You think you will be safe when you send your child, you get very excited when you send your child to school and something like that happens,” she said.Reynolds has lived in Rosewood for 15 years and said he was worried about the future after such a deadly event.”I hate to even hear it from the neighborhood because it’s usually a much more welcoming and friendly neighborhood than that,” he said.

The Columbia police department said they are still investigating and working with the Fifth Circuit Attorney’s office on the case. The University of South Carolina sent the following statement to News19 in part:”Our Student Affairs team provides resources and support to those who may be affected by this tragedy, and we remind all our students that they are always ready to help.”
