La Trobe University student allegedly murdered by husband
A woman studying at a university in Australia died after she was allegedly killed by her husband in Singapore.
Sewwandi Diyawinnage, 32, was allegedly stabbed to death while on holiday with her partner Eshan Tharaka Koottage on September 9.
It is understood that the pair had an argument before Mr Koottage allegedly stabbed him.
He handed himself in to police before officers found his wife’s lifeless body next to a bloody knife at the Holiday Inn Express Singapore Katong.
Ms Diyawinnage was studying chemical science at La Trobe University in Melbourne and was reunited with her husband during a brief getaway in Singapore.
She had told her friends that she was excited to see him again after living away from him for over a year.
Mr. Koottage was charged with murder, a capital offense.
Mrs. Diyawinnage’s classmate, Elizabeth Campher, said Mrs. Diyawinnage had not seen her husband in more than a year.
‘He was working in Sri Lanka while she was studying here,’ she said.
‘This was the first time they’d seen each other in over a year, so she was really excited to go on holiday with him.’
Ms Diyawinnage was described as ‘warm and friendly’.
“He was a friend to many and always had kind words and a smile,” Ms. Campher said.
‘It didn’t matter who he was, he always asked everyone how they were going, he always had a real personal interest in people.’
‘She got top grades and was happy to help with difficult chemistry questions.
‘It really had so much potential, it’s just devastating.’
La Trobe University held a memorial service for Ms Diyawinnage on Monday.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of one of our students, Sewwandi Diyawinnage, while on holiday in Singapore,” a spokesman said.
‘Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and we are in regular contact with them, as well as with their student peers and colleagues at La Trobe.
‘The university is providing welfare support and other assistance while his family and friends suffer.’
